OUR CURRICULUM
Within the Preschool, the classrooms are divided into five areas, corresponding to the major topics of Montessori learning:
- Practical Life
- Sensorial
- Math
- Language
- Cultural topics (Art, Geography, etc)
The children are able to decide for themselves which of the lessons they will practice at any given time. The only prerequisite is that the lesson should already have been demonstrated to the child by a teacher to ensure the child follows the lesson in the prescribed Montessori fashion. The child may then practice the lesson as often and for as long as he/she wishes. Freedom of choice and freedom of movement are two of the key principles of a Montessori education.
Kindergarten
Montessori Children's House has very small kindergarten classes. We generally do not have more than ten children in a session. This gives the teacher time to give individual attention to the children without taking away their independence.
Computers
Our computers have a complete set of Montessori Software; it is available to our Kindergartners and the pre-k children.
Daily Schedule
Each month the master teacher prepares a calendar of events and themes. We have a monthly family project that is fun for everyone. The work-cycle begins as soon as the children arrive and continues until group time. After group time is playtime outside.
Snack & Lunch
Snack is paid for out of the supply/activity fee. A brown bag lunch is brought from home.
Field Trips
Our field trips are always a lot of fun. We usually rent a school bus to take us to places like the Children's Museum in Portsmouth, a local farm, and in the spring we go to a garden center.
Extra-Curricular Activities
In addition to our Montessori Curriculum extra curricular activities are also offered such as:
- King Tiger Martial Arts
- Abrakadoodle Art Program
- Jungle Gym Gymnastics
- Little People's
Creative Dance Workshop
All extra curricular activities are scheduled once a week and are held after the work cycle.
Holidays & Closures
Holidays and closures often follow the Virginia Beach City Public School schedule, however, please go to our online parent newsletter at http://2mch.tripod.com to view school closings and current parent information. This calendar is updated monthly.
